Today was our last day of riding. We had a fairly easy day: ish mostly flat miles by the southeastern coast. We started at the hotel and rode down to the coast. The first scenic stop was a lighthouse overlooking the bay with siracusa on the other side. Here we are:. We pedaled on to our lunch stop. A woman at the hotel owned a small parcel of land with a trailer on it and she let VBT use it for our lunch stop. We stopped there and Eduardo and Marco prepared a fabulous picnic.
Once again, we ate waaaay too much. We got back on the bikes and left the route to do a side trip into Siracusa in part because the scheduled ride was pretty short and we had time to kills and in part because we were so close to some interesting sights in Siracusa. The purpose of the side trip was to visit some of the famous archaeological ruins in Sicily. We decided our first priority would be the Catacombe di San Giovanni.
We got there in time to jump on the back of an english-speaking tour and it was really nice to have someone explain everything to us. It was clean, well-lit and well-presented unlike the other places where we stopped that we basically sites with a sign. We were not able to take pictures inside but here are a couple of pictures of the outside.
Then we headed back to the hotel. Riding in Siracusa gave us a taste of urban riding in Italy. If you read the posting from our time in Palermo, you already know that we were happy not to be on bikes there. A lot of Pinerellos. Not one female cyclist. I thought this was just an odd name that translated badly but apparently it describes an occupational group and its location.
It was like one of dozens out round-abouts we had seen on the trip and in one corner through a hole in the fence were a couple of women. They were under a thick stand of trees and I assumed they were just taking a break from picking fruit.
